Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Abby Chan from Madison, Alabama, has made a verbal pledge to the University of Florida for 2027-28. She wrote on social media:
“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Florida! First and foremost, I want to thank God for blessing me with the opportunities, strength, and people who have guided me along the way. I’m so grateful for my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for their endless love and support. A huge thank you to Coach Nesty, Coach Whitney, Coach Kristin, Coach Jack, and Coach Alex for believing in me and giving me this incredible opportunity. GO GATORS!!!
”
Chan swims for Bob Jones High School, where she is a junior, and the club team Huntsville Swim Association. The second-fastest 100 backstroker in the cohort, we ranked her #13 on our Way Too Early list of top girls swimming recruits from the high school class of 2027. She is Florida’s first ranked verbal commit for the class of 2031; the Gators have also received nods from “Best of the Rest” swimmers Blakely Hammel and Kate Canales, as well as from Canada’s Ranumi Eashwarage.
Chan is the Alabama High School defending champion in the 100 fly and the double-defending champion in the 100 back. As a freshman at the AHSAA State Championships, she won the 100 back with 55.71 and was runner-up in the fly with 54.78. She notched a PB in the latter, as well as the 100 free (52.37) leading off the 400 free relay. As a sophomore last fall, she repeated her title in the 100 fly with a new PB (53.82), won the 100 back (53.85), and scored a PB in the 50 free (25.07) on the leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay.
At the conclusion of high school season, Chan competed at Winter Juniors East and lowered her PBs in the 50 free (22.79) and 100 fly (53.61). She placed 18th in the 50 free, 18th in the 100 back, and 12th in the 100 fly. At NCSA Spring Championships in March, she won the 50 fly (23.96), was runner-up in the 50 back (24.85), and came in 3rd in the 100 back (52.66), 3rd in the 100 fly (53.22), 4th in the 50 free (22.89), and 13th in the 100 free (50.51), all the while lowering her lifetime bests in the 50/100 back and 50/100 fly.
Most of her best long-course times this summer came from the AP Race London International at the end of May, where she went 26.62 in the 50 free, 29.27 in the 50 back, 1:03.42 in the 100 back, and 27.99 in the 50 fly.
Chan’s best times would already be of use to the Gators, who lost SEC Champion Bella Sims to transfer after last season. She would have scored in the ‘B’ final of the 100 back and she would have just missed the ‘C’ final in the 50 free (it took 22.40 to score).
Best SCY times:
- 100 back – 52.66
- 50 free – 22.66
- 100 fly – 53.22
- 200 back – 2:01.88
- 100 free – 50.42
