The Miami women dominated their first dual meet of the season against Division II school Florida Southern, scoring 192 points to Florida Southern’s 66.

The Hurricanes were led by a few two-event winners, starting with Kate Sommerstad who took the top time in the 1000 free at 10:18.29, a new season best time for her, dropping from the 10:18.86 she swam last weekend.

She also won the 200 backstroke in 2:03.05, touching more than two seconds ahead of 2nd place finisher, teammate Jemma Burns. This was her first time swimming the event since 2023, when she swam 2:04.56.

Ashlyn Massey took the other distance freestyle events, touching first in the 200 freestyle with her 1:47.17, a three second drop from the 1:50.48 she swam last November at the SMU Invitational.

Her 500 freestyle time of 4:51.12 won the event by about four seconds over teammate Sophie Lenze, marking her first time racing the event.

Freshman Isabelle Videment won the 100 back and 200 IM, swimming both events for the first time in SCY. In the 100 back, she swam 56.42 to touch about a second ahead of Florida Southern’s Zoe Celi, and in the 200 IM, she swam 2:02.77 to win by nearly five seconds ahead of teammate Phoebe Mayo.

Videment also swam the 100 free, finishing 2nd to freshman teammate Zofia Sobczak in 51.05. Sobczak swam 50.98 to finish 1st in her first time swimming the event in SCY.

She also won the 100 breast in 1:04.42, a new personal best time by about a second, dropping from the 1:05.39 she swam last weekend.

Savannah Barr swept the fly events touching in 1:59.78 for the 200 fly and 54.34 in the 100 fly. Her 200 fly was a new personal best time, dropping from the 1:59.87 she swam in February at the ACC Championships, and her 100 fly time was only about three tenths off her lifetime best of 54.01 from last November’s SMU Invite.

Addy Vonderahe was the only other individual event winner for the Hurricanes, winning the women’s 50 free in 23.40. This was a new season best time, dropping from the 23.71 she swam at the beginning of October, but was just off her best of 23.07 from May of 2024.

Miami also won both relays. Their 200 medley relay team of Leah Treglia, Isabelle Videment, Ashlyn Massey, and Addy Vonderahe touched in 1:41.88 to beat the Florida Southern ‘A’ team’s time of 1:45.48.

The 400 freestyle relay went to Miami’s ‘A’ team of Ashlyn Massey (49.86), Zofia Sobczak (51.11), Addy Vonderahe (50.83), and Savannah Barr (50.17) with their time of 3:21.97. The Hurricanes took the top three spots in this relay with the ‘B’ finishing 2nd (3:29.31) and the ‘C’ finishing 3rd (3:29.86). Florida Southern’s ‘A’ relay finished 4th in 3:31.50.

The Florida Southern Moccasins won one event, the women’s 200 breaststroke with sophomore Alexa Paredes touching in 2:25.13. This was a new lifetime best time for her, dropping from the 2:25.70 she swam last November at her midseason invitational.
