In a battle between two of the top Division 3 programs in the country, Kenyon’s women topped Denison 170-130, while the Big Red men of Denison countered with a 178-122 victory over the Owl men at the Trumbull Aquatic Center.
Women’s Recap
The Kenyon women notched nine event wins en route to a road win over their Big Red counterparts.
Kenyon seniors Molly Hagg, Lisa Torrecillas-Jouault, and Gwen Eisenbeis each won two events, spearheading Kenyon’s winning effort.
Hagg’s first win came in the 200 freestyle, clocking 1:53.66, finishing over two seconds ahead of the field. She later earned another event victory in the 500 free, clocking 5:04.00, Kenyon sophomore Nora Lee Brown finished just behind in 5:06.63.
Brown claimed the first women’s event win on the day with her performance in the 1000 free, touching in a commanding 10:27.34, over eight seconds ahead of the field.
Torrecillas-Joualt swept the sprint free events, clocking 24.12 in the 50 free, and followed up with her 52.64 in the 100 free.
Eisenbeis was untouchable in the backstroke events, sweeping both the 100 back (56.79) and 200 back (2:05.47).
Owls’ sophomore Kelsey Van Eldik took the 100 breast by just over a full second in 1:03.70.
The Kenyon women closed out their scoring with a 200 free relay win in 1:35.25 to put the finishing touches on their winning outing.
The Denison women were led by their performance on the boards. Senior Lu-Si Minnich won both the 1-meter and 3-meter, scoring 255.00 and 268.13, respectively.
Denison opened up with an early relay win, clocking 1:43.83 in the 200 medley relay to open up the scoring for the Big Red.
Senior Emily Harris was the top individual scorer for Denison in the pool, winning both the 400 IM (4:31.07) and 200 butterfly (2:05.21).
Denison earned two other individual event wins in the form of senior Phoebe Ferguson in the 100 fly (56.69), and senior Drue Thielking in the 200 breast (2:22.08).
Men’s Recap
The Denison men opened up the scoring in between the lanelines with a win in the 200 medley relay, clocking 1:30.67, just under a second faster than Kenyon in 1:31.43.
Sophomore George Goins opened up the individual scoring in the pool for Denison with his 1000 free win, clocking 9:42.65. He later completed the distance sweep, claiming the 500 free in 4:45.81.
Denison junior Jack Hill replicated Goins’ success by winning a pair of freestyle races, claiming the 100 free (45.06) and the 200 free (1:39.92).
Denison junior Liam Nelson narrowly out-touched Noel Tumbasz of Kenyon by seven hundredths to win the 100 breast in 57.22.
Junior Max Lough followed up Nelson’s 100 breast win with a 200 fly win for the Big Red, finishing just over four tenths ahead of Roman Savage of Kenyon to emerge victorious in 1:52.41.
Junior Teak Bunditkitsada completed Denison’s breaststroke sweep, comfortably winning the 200 breast in 2:06.67.
Denison’s performance on the boards was a key separating factor. Senior Nick Fogle swept the 1-meter (356.95) and 3-meter (308.33) events, earning valuable points for the Big Red.
Kenyon stood tough against their in-state counterpart, freshman Kristof Szappanos stormed to a 100 back win and season best in 51.32, just over two tenths ahead of Denison’s Ben Bevill in 51.53 for the Owls first men’s win on the day. He later won the 200 back in 1:52.76, winning by just four hundredths of a second over Luke Swiggett of Denison.
Senior Djordje Dragojlovic notched another win for Kenyon in the 50 free, outtouching Nick Hensel of Denison by two hundredths of a second in 20.47.
Junior Roman Savage picked up the 100 fly win in 50.09; Savage was the only swimmer under 51 seconds in the event, Denison’s Asher Cole finished runner up in 51.24.
Kenyon put a stamp on the 400 IM to close out the Owl’s wins with senior Ethan Manske clearing the field by over seven seconds, turning in a time of 4:04.37.
Kenyon’s divers will head to Indianapolis to take part in the House of Champions Invite on November 20th-22nd, while the swimmers will host the Total Performance Invitational from November 20th-22nd.
Denison will head on the road to face John Carroll on November 15th.
