France-based music rights management firm 22D Music buys stake in indie publishing company Velvetica Music

22D Music Group, an independent music rights management company, has acquired a stake in music publishing company Velvetica Music.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The combination marks “the merger of two highly complementary players in the French music publishing industry,” 22D Music said in a press release on Friday (September 5).

Founded in 2006, Paris-headquartered 22D Music specializes in music rights management. It also operates in the international audiovisual industry.

The company has a team of around 20 employees and its in-house creative department supports authors, composers, producers, publishers, and creators “at every stage” of music production, the company said.

22D Music claims to control “the entire collection chain for music publishing and secondary rights” through its network of partner offices, sub-publishers, and direct affiliations with over 25 major collective management organizations.

It administers music publishing catalogs of audiovisual producers like France Television, RTVE, UGC, Banijay Studio France, Faber and Cartoon Saloon, as well as film composers Amine Bouhafa, Bruno Coulais, Atli Örvarsson, Eric Neveux and Stephen Warbeck, and artists and songwriters like Asha Putli, Mylène Farmer, Peter Cat Recording, Camille Bazbaz, Maddy Street and Little Bob, among others.

The company also provides music services for feature films and TV series.

Meanwhile, Velvetica Music was founded in 2011 by Thomas Jamois, who serves as a board member of French CMO SACEM, publishers’ group CSDEM, as well as CEMF and SEAM. Last year, Jamois was appointed as Managing Director of Wise Music France. He also previously held the position of Head of Music Publishing and Synch at Naïve for seven years.

Velvetica has 12 employees under the management of Johanna Bisac. The company serves as a music publisher administrator and sub-publisher for players in the audiovisual sector such as Pathé, Gaumont, Orange, Banijay and Fédération, as well as players in the pop music industry including artists, labels and publishers. Its clients include Phoenix, Caravan Palace, JB Dunckel, Yuksek, Bucks Music, Beggars Music and Manners McDade.

In 2020, Velvetica  inked a sub-publishing deal with UK-born Bucks Music Group.

Emmanuel Delétang, CEO of 22D Music Group, said the merger between 22D Music and Velvetica “is based on a shared vision of rights management: independent, expert,  and resolutely focused on the needs of our partners and clients.”

“Through this alliance, we aim to strengthen our expertise and enhance the quality of  services we provide, particularly to stakeholders in the audiovisual production industry.”

“We want to develop a model that is nimble and can address today’s digital and  environmental challenges in a sector where practices evolve rapidly and the volume of  data continues to multiply, where ensuring the traceability of usage and revenues has  become a major issue.”

Delétang continued: “Through this alliance, we aim to strengthen our expertise and enhance the quality of  services we provide, particularly to stakeholders in the audiovisual production industry.”
